Divorce or Parenting Concerns: Where to Begin
You do not have to explain your entire relationship in the first conversation. Start with the decision or problem that needs attention now.

Name the concern in everyday words
You might be considering separation, trying to work out a parenting schedule or responding to papers you received. Describe that concern first. If several issues overlap, list them and mark which feels most urgent rather than trying to choose a legal label.
Keep everyday needs and court papers separate
Write down the practical question you want answered: a schedule, a financial concern or an upcoming meeting. Separately, note whether there is an existing case, order or hearing. Do not assume an informal agreement changes an existing court order; ask a lawyer about your situation.
Prepare questions about your children
The California Courts guide explains that custody and parenting plans address decisions about children and time with each parent. Before a conversation, note the current routine and the specific part that is causing difficulty. Keep children’s names, school information and sensitive family details out of this initial request.
